Roadtrip: The Apple Stomp Two-Day Ska Festival in NYC, May 31-June 1

We’re clearly going to The Apple Stomp, a two-day ska festival at Irving Plaza in New York City. The bill boasts a handful of the strongest current touring ska acts, but the real treat is the reunion of many defunct acts from the late 90s.

the screw ups ep cover artFor all the negative things that have put Newtown, CT in the news, it will always be a musical hub in my mind. I grew up a few towns over and the Newtown Teen Center had a somewhat mythical status. I’m not sure I could name all of the bands I saw in high school that came out of Newtown. Connecticut-based punk/ska record label Asbestos Records credits the town with being the catalyst for the label’s creation.

Further cementing the belief that ska is beach music, Reel Big Fish will be headlining the Boston University Senior BBQ on Saturday, May 11. The event runs 7pm to 11pm and we’re not quite sure what “headlining” means. While only open to BU seniors, we couldn’t help but notice that the show takes place outdoors at the BU Beach (see map below).

I met Sammy Kay in New York City when he was playing with The Forthrights and I was playing with The Hard Times and we were playing gigs together every two minutes. Well around the time I was getting ready to move to Boston, he had put a new band together, called Sammy Kay and the Fast Four. They played a few gigs before Sammy took off for the west coast where he plays with the East Los 3.
